Internet Investments

Members of the Opus Capital team have been involved in the Internet since its early days, both in operating roles—at such companies as ANS, AOL and UUNET—and as investors. As the Web enters its next phase we will stay at the forefront by partnering with committed entrepreneurs who are leading the charge.

Previous investments by the Opus Capital team include:

DoubleClick

In 1997, when early Internet businesses were still in search of revenue models, advertising was not an obvious one. In fact, both advertising pros and venture investors were highly skeptical of the Internet as an effective advertising medium. Not us. We invested in DoubleClick (NASDAQ: DLCK), which had its initial public offering in 1998, raising $60 million—nearly double the amount it expected when it first filed to go public. Since that time, DoubleClick has transformed the field, and today is an undisputed leader in digital advertising.

Phone.com

Entrepreneur Alain Rossman saw an opportunity that didn't exist. In 1995, while the rest of the world was trying to figure out what the Internet meant for PCs and connectivity, Rossman saw that mobile phones would one day be Internet-enabled. We believed in him and his vision of the future and in 1996 invested in Phone.com. The company became responsible for inventing the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), now the protocol used for the majority of the world's mobile Internet sites. In 2000 Phone.com merged with Software.com to create a $6.4 billion company called OpenWave (NASDAQ: OPWV).
