Having helped pioneer networking technologies in the 1980s and 1990s, the team at Opus Capital has also been involved in recent successes both in operating roles at such companies as Decru and Juniper and as investors. Today we're interested in helping entrepreneurs push the envelope on both the speed and functionality of tomorrow's networks.
At the time of its 1999 IPO, Airgate PCS (NASDAQ: PCSA) was flying high, raising $113.9 million. The company also was one of the largest Sprint PCS affiliates in the United States, reaching more than 14.5 million people. But success hadn't come quickly to this Atlanta-based company. In the years following our 1995 investment, the company had some tough business cycles, but we believed in them. And we still do. Founders Chris Blaine, Tom Bode and Shelly Spencer went on to start other companies, and brought these opportunities to us. Today, Wirefree Partners is one of those investments.
Initially, the founders of Harmonic (NASDAQ: HLIT) had their sights set on test instrumentation. Following our 1990 seed investment, we worked closely with them to help evolve the strategy to go after the cable TV space, which had yet to capitalize on technology. With an IPO in 1995 that yielded generous returns to investors, Harmonic today is a leading provider of broadband optical networking and digital video systems to cable, satellite, terrestrial, telecom and wireless operators.
